Director of Athletics Development

Primary Purpose:
The Director of Athletics Development serves as a key member of University Development's and Athletics' leadership teams. They will share responsibility for the strategic direction of Athletics' successful fundraising. This position works closely with Athletics' and University Development leaders, and fundraising colleagues across Pacific's three-city university campuses, to oversee philanthropic support primarily at the annual gifts level (gifts up to $25K), with some additional major gift ($25K and above) responsibility as well. They will build relationships with alumni, friends, businesses and organizations with the ability to make annual/major gifts to Pacific to achieve Pacific's and Athletics' missions, visions, values and annual/campaign fundraising goals. Additionally, the Director leads the Pacific Athletic Foundation (PAF) and Board of Directors.

Essential Functions:
  1. Provides leadership, administration and coordination for all Athletics annual and campaign fundraising goals in an effort to increase donations.
  2. Leads and manages annual and campaign business plans and activities to achieve annual giving fundraising goals as they relate to Pacific Athletics.
  3. Work closely with the Executive Associate Athletic Director for Development to formulate long term strategic plan for athletic development.
  4. Serves as the Director of the PAF.
  5. Leads and coordinates all Athletics annual giving fundraising volunteers such as the PAF Board of Directors. Ensures that volunteer councils and organizations for the various Athletics programs are integrated with a broad-based volunteer structure for Pacifics campus-wide programs.
  6. Leads the day-to-day operations of the Pacific Athletic Foundation (PAF) including but not limited to in-person solicitations, renewal mailings, increasing the volunteer base, stewardship of current donors, etc.
  7. Plans and oversees all PAF outreach and fundraising events, in conjunction with the Manager of Athletics Development, including but not limited to the Orange and Black Ball, hospitalities and PAF outreach events. Works with the coaching staff to assist with sport program fundraising events.
  8. Manage a portfolio of annual and major gift donors and prospects, as defined by working with the Office of Development, from initial identification, cultivation, proposal development, solicitation and through stewardship, developing plans and programs to maximize gift revenue, capital and endowment gifts.
  9. Manages a personal prospect portfolio of 125-150 annual gift donors. Conducts 5-10 face-to-face prospect visits each week. Ensures an average of 8-10 solicitations each month.
  10. Secures support, enhances relationships and promotes awareness for Pacific Athletics by: acquiring private support for Athletics from alumni, friends, parents businesses and corporations. developing and implementing cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for individual prospects and donors; working with administration, staff and volunteers as appropriate.
  11. Ensures maximum private support for assigned areas through strong leadership, ensuring adherence to performance measures, and integrating a philosophy of collaboration, attitude and performance throughout the development team.
  12. Maintains absolute integrity and confidentiality in all situations, especially donor information and confidentiality.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree.
  • Five (5) years of experience in fundraising with progressively responsible management and leadership experience in higher education/Athletics fundraising and campaigns.
  • Experience coordinating events.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated knowledge and proven success in fundraising and campaigns.
  • Understanding of how Athletic Departments run in a University setting and experience working with student-athletes, coaches and athletic department personnel.
  • Ability to lead, manage, motivate and supervise staff and volunteers.
  • Outstanding verbal communication skills; excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to write concept papers, proposals and grants.
  • Solid negotiation, public relations and strategic planning skills.
  • Excellent organization, presentation and event management skills.
  • Ability to develop and monitor budgets and schedules.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies.
  • Resourcefulness in finding appropriate solutions to problems and initiative in presenting alternatives and implementing solutions to ensure effective change.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and take necessary action to eliminate or mitigate potential negative effects.
  • Use initiative to organize and follow through with complex tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Skill to use computer software programs at the level of sophistication required for the development office.
  • Proven ability to use MS Office Suite and development database programs. Knowledge of Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Encompass traits of good judgment, confidentiality and discretion in communicating with colleagues and constituents.
  • Knowledge of annual giving fundraising principles and able to participate in a complex development program, especially within an educational organization.
  • Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking across campus, climbing stairs, bending, stooping and reaching. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds or more.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment. Must be prepared to work non-business hours and weekends. Frequent travel both local and overnight.

Valid drivers license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the Universitys fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.

Hiring Range: $70,000 - $90,000 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidates qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
