This position performs its duties on both the Kentfield and Indian Valley (Novato) campuses, so if not already residing within the Bay Area, the successful candidate must be willing to relocate.

Position Overview
The job of Athletic Trainer is done for the purpose/s of administering preventive and rehabilitation treatment to student athletes. Organizes and oversees pre-screenings; coordinate medical coverage and insurance process for home games and injured athletes. Under the direction of the Director of Athletics and Physical Education.

Essential Functions


  • Attends home athletic events and other off-campus sports events as assigned, (e.g. football games, etc.) for the purpose of providing medical coverage; administering first aid to injured student athletics; evaluating injuries, and providing refers to physicians, health services and hospitals as necessary.
  • Consults with physicians, students, parents and coaches concerning preventive and rehabilitative treatments, strength and conditioning, diet and nutrition programs for the purpose of conveying information and providing a safe environment.
  • Coordinates medical coverage and insurance process for athletic teams and injured athletes; completes accident and insurance forms for submission to appropriate personnel for authorization for the purpose of complying with mandated safety and health requirements.
  • Implements physician instructions for the purpose of providing treatment to the injured student athletes using techniques of corrective and physical therapy.
  • Instructs and assists in the performance of exercises (including in-home) and operations of therapeutic devices and equipment; prescribes proper exercise and rehabilitation programs for the purpose of monitoring and providing feedback on athlete's progress.
  • Organizes and oversees pre-season medical screenings for the purpose of complying with mandates requirements.

REQUIREMENTS
  • A Bachelor's degree in job related area; and
  • Job related experience; and
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, disabilities and learning styles of community college students and staff.
Certificates & Licenses (or ability to obtain upon hire)
  • CPR/First Aid Certificate
  • Valid CA Driver's License and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance program
  • Certification by the National Athletic Trainer Association

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES (Desirable Attributes & Skills):
SKILLS are required to perform multiple technical tasks with an occasional need to upgrade skills due to changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform advanced math; read technical information, compose a variety of documents and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: health and safety standards; basic human anatomy and physiology; principles, methods and equipment used in physical rehabilitation, training and conditioning; methods of evaluating muscle, joint and neurological functions.

ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and coordinate a number of factors in the use of equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others under a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and use equipment for a variety of purposes under different conditions that requires an understanding of various methods of operation. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of different types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of job related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues, create plans of action and reach solutions; with data it is limited; and with equipment it is moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; meeting deadlines and schedules. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, disabilities and learning styles of community college students and staff.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:
  1. In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  2. Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
  3. California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
  4. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency. RESPONSIBILITY
Responsibilities include: working under standardized instructions and/or routines focusing primarily on results; providing information and/or advising other persons; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines. WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; significant climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; significant reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 80% walking and 15% standing. The job is performed under with some temperature extremes, some hazardous conditions (e.g. mechanical, cuts, burns, infectious disease, high decibel noise, etc.), and in varying atmospheric conditions.

SALARY INFORMATION
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Salary Range: SEIU 620

WORK SCHEDULE
Campus: Kentfield and Indian Valley Campus (Novato)
Full-time Equivalent: .50 FTE - part-time
Months per Year: 12
Work Days/Hours: This is a 50% (20 hours/week) role with scheduling coordinated in collaboration with the full-time Athletic Trainer; while event coverage is required, there is some flexibility in days and times depending on the season of sport.

CLASSIFICATION CATEGORY & RETIREMENT PLAN
The Athletic Trainer is a classified position represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), in compliance with all applicable sections of the California Education Code and related statutes. Employees in classifications represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1021 and are required to comply fully with the SEIU/Marin Community College District (MCCD) Collective Bargaining Agreement. General information regarding rights and responsibilities under the Agreement can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreements section of our Human Resources site. SEIU employees are also members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), to which the member contributes up to 8% of their reportable compensation on a monthly basis.


SELECTION PROCESS

SEIU Full-time Employees:
  • Medical Insurance: The District offers six plan options through Kaiser and Blue Shield. Effective 10/01/2025,the District's contributions for medical insurance coverage are as follows:
    • Employee-only: $1,700/month
    • Employee plus one dependent: $2,400/month
    • Employee plus two or more dependents: $2,900/month

Dental and Vision Insurance - Delta Dental and VSP vision plans for employee and dependents, with no cost to employees
Vacation Leave - 102 hours of accrual annually, with additional accrual after 3, 10, and 14 years of service
Paid Holidays - 18 paid holidays annually, which includes a paid winter holiday break at the end of December.

Sick Leave - 8 hours per month, 96 hours per year
Retirement through CalPERS - MCCD contributes 27.05% of employee's creditable earnings to CalPERS on a monthly basis (2024/2025). Vested after five (5) years. Mandatory employee contribution for 2024/2025 is 7% - 8%, depending on original date of membership and prior membership status.
Life Insurance - $50,000, with the option to purchase additional voluntary life insurance for the Lesser of 5x base annual salary or $500,000
Additional Retirement Savings Plans - Employees are also eligible to participate in a voluntary, tax-advantaged 403(b) or 457(b) retirement savings plan.
