Job Description Summary
The Athletics Psychologist is a licensed mental health clinician embedded within the Division of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics (DRIA) who provides comprehensive psychological services to varsity student-athletes. This role includes individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, mental health education, and collaboration with campus partners to support student well-being. The psychologist works closely with Penn's Student Health and Counseling team to ensure coordinated care and participates in treatment planning and clinical reviews. The position also leads outreach and prevention efforts tailored to the unique challenges faced by student-athletes, including identity-based concerns and stigma around mental health. This role is essential in fostering a culture of wellness and resilience within Penn Athletics.

Job Responsibilities

Individual & Group Psychotherapy - Provide direct clinical services to student-athletes, including 1:1 and group therapy, assessment, treatment planning, and referrals. Participate in clinical review and multidisciplinary treatment teams through Student Health and Counseling; Assessment & Triage - Conduct initial assessments for incoming and returning student-athletes. Provide drop-in (walk-in or phone) services and identify at-risk individuals. Maintain communication with campus partners for coordinated care.
Outreach, Education, & Prevention - Design and deliver tailored outreach and educational programming to reduce stigma, increase awareness, and promote mental wellness. Collaborate with CSAS PAWLA & Mental Performance Services, and coaches to address student-athlete-specific mental health topics.
Crisis Intervention, Campus Partnerships & Consultation - Serve as the first responder for student-athlete mental health crises. Coordinate with Student Intervention Services, the Department of Public Safety, and other units for emergency response and follow-up. - Engage with DRIA, Student Health and Counseling, and other university units to ensure integrated care and coordination on student wellbeing initiatives. Offer consultation to coaches and staff regarding student-athlete mental health.
Supervision & Training -Provide supervision to trainees or other staff working with student-athletes. Contribute to professional development activities that enhance clinical services for this population.
Documentation & Reporting- Document clinical activity, participate in staff meetings, attend relevant trainings, and contribute to benchmarking and annual reports.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Master's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, or Counseling with 3 to 5 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Must be licensed in the State of Pennsylvania.
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Psychology or Social Work preferred.
